Get support to start a new youth group

We have put together a support package to help communities in Perth and Kinross start up their own Youth Group.  This offer is open to any community in Perth and Kinross, regardless of size.  There are less opportunities for young people in smaller communities, and a new Youth Group would offer opportunities that are not available locally.  The offer includes:

You will have more questions than answers, as you start your journey towards opening the doors of a new Youth Group.  Perth and Kinross is divided into five localities and each one has a member of the Perthshire Youth Work Partnership.  All of them have agreed to act as a Mentor Youth Group for you.

Your first task will be recruiting wider support from within your community.  All sorts of skills are needed – people to form a committee to run the Group, people to be available to run the Group, someone to help with Finance, and someone to find a venue for the Group, are just a start.

Consulting young people in your community about what activities they would like is critical and the starting point for youth ownership of your Youth Group.

Perth and Kinross Council has offered to provide Child Protection Training and The Gannochy Trust will fund your membership of Youth Scotland, the National Agency for community Youth Groups.  Youth Scotland will support your access to Disclosure Checks.  TSI (P&K) will support you to write a constitution for your new Group.

The Gannochy Trust Youth Panel has agreed to offer £500 to each Youth Group start up project.  They cannot provide this funding to Groups that are not registered charities, so this funding will be provided to you via your Mentor Youth Group once you have a constitution written.

This offer is brought together by a range of experts in their fields; seven established Perth and Kinross Mentor Youth Groups; Perth and Kinross Council; Youth Scotland; TSI (P&K); and The Gannochy Trust Youth Panel.

What we ask you to do, is gather together people, including young people, in your community to take ownership of your Youth Group.

If you wish, staff from Youth Scotland and/or your Youth Group Mentor will help you deliver your first three Youth Group sessions.

One size doesn’t fit all, there’s no problem if you want to cherry pick elements of the offer.  We are trying to offer support and a safety net for new Youth Group start-ups, every one will be different.
